How often do you sit down to watch the news? If I had to guess, I’d say probably not multiple times a day. According to the Pew Research Center, most people don’t get their news directly from the television or newspaper paper anymore; they get it from social media or other smartphone-based sites. This is a modern example of Paul Lazarsfeld’s "two-step flow of information" from 1948, which highlights thought leaders' influential role in shaping public opinion.
Thought leaders hold the key to filtering and disseminating information to the masses. Their authority and expertise in their respective fields allow them to act as go-betweens from the media to the general public. By leveraging their influence, they shape public opinion, promote ideas, and drive specific outcomes. Thought leaders can be political figures, celebrities, talk show hosts, companies, community leaders, social media influencers, or even social media sites.
As a Digital Media Manager, I work with individuals and businesses aiming to become thought leaders and influencers in their niche. Being a true thought leader is more than just being an influencer; you also need to be an expert in your niche and provide value to your followers.
The thought leaders and influencers that I am responsible for recruiting, cultivating, and curating have to take in large amounts of information, determine what is relevant to themselves and their follower base, and present that information in a way that will influence some outcome, whether that be buying a product, using a service, believing in an ideology, etc.
I have embraced the two-step flow theory in my news-gathering routines and how I share the news. By recognizing the significance of thought leaders and influencers, sharing personalized recommendations, evaluating the information I receive, and engaging in meaningful conversations, my goal is to contribute to only spreading trustworthy and valuable information.
We live in an era where thought leaders and influencers hold immense authority, so we all need to be mindful of the information we consume and share as well as the impact it has on shaping the opinions and actions of others. In this digital age, where information spreads rapidly, I believe that it is our collective responsibility to ensure that the information we share is accurate and reliable.
The two-step flow theory was first proposed more than 80 years ago, but it is increasingly relevant to the way news and information are dispersed today. So how do you get your news? Directly from the source or from a trusted thought leader? Or maybe you are the thought leader! Let me know in the comments or send me an email at the link below, I'd love to hear from you!
